Name of Document: 9-11 Truth
Context: Those who belong to the “9/11 Truth” movement are sometimes mockingly called “truthers,” and support the conspiracy theory that the American government was responsible for the attacks on September 11, 2001. This image documents one action by these protestors.
Potential relevance for the future: While conspiracy theories are nothing new, one major advocate of the 9/11 Truth movement is Alex Jones, creator of reported fake news site Infowars — one of the trusted sources of President Donald Trump. This image documents the ways in which American citizens in 2007 opposed the contemporary US government (note: signs reading “STOP BUSH,” or with images of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney captioned with “IMPEACH”), operating outside of the two-party or even third-party framework and expanding instead to foster an entirely new movement which may have given rise to the “alt-right” or far-right resurgence we see active today. One wonders what these groups may indicate with their protests about the political future now.
