Context: W. Mark Felt, also known as Deep Throat, served in the FBI during the infamous Watergate scandal of the Nixon administration and operated as the main informant of Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as they worked to reveal the entire operation — a scheme that ultimately caused President Nixon to resign in disgrace.

Potential relevance for the future: Some liberal news correspondents have linked the Trump administration to the Nixon administration, most notably for the known interference by the Russian government in the 2016 election in their active proliferation of fake news articles and leaks to WikiLeaks targeting the Democratic National Committee and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton. While the comparisons could be made, elements of the Watergate scandal seem very much of their time — namely, the covert and notably low-tech means through which Woodward communicated with Deep Throat, and the nature of journalism in the 1970s as opposed to the way it operates today.

Other relevant headings: Watergate, Vanity Fair, Deep Throat, political scandals, Nixon, Trump, Russia, political corruption, Committee for Reelection, Democratic National Committee, elections, electioneering, spying, journalism, new media journalism, Washington Post
