Name: Obies at the Beach

Location: Laguna Beach, CA

Context: This is a snapchat taken by my friend (and fellow Oberlin student) Charlotte took when I visited her at her house in Laguna Beach, CA over winter term in January of 2017. While talking about our winter term projects during a walk in town, we decided to go down to the beach. Once we got there, we took off our shoes and realized that not only were we both wearing fun plant-themed socks, but were both wearing Dansko Clogs. We laughed saying that before we went to Oberlin both of us thought these clogs were ugly, and talked about the ways in which Oberlin had changed our styles.

Relevance: This photo displays the very distinct aesthetic fostered by the Oberlin community and how they have changed Oberlin students view on certain items. While style naturally changes as one ages, this photo’s caption “Obies at the Beach” implies that this almost part of an Oberlin uniform, something that marks us in this point and time as Obies, even when we’re off campus, in Southern California.
